Rafael Grohmann

Rafael Grohmann is the Canada Research Chair in Digital Labour and an Assistant Professor of Media Studies (Critical Platform Studies) at the University of Toronto. He is a founding editor of the journal Platforms & Society and Director of the DigiLabour Research Lab.

His research focuses on digital labour, AI and work, AI in the cultural sector, workers’ organizing, platform cooperativism, and the digital solidarity economy, particularly in Latin America. He is currently working on two book projects: Prototypes of Struggles: Workers Failing and Learning to Govern Platforms, under contract with the University of California Press, and AI and Work: A Critical Introduction, co-authored with Kenzo Soares Seto and under contract with Polity.

He has held affiliations with the University of Oxford (United Kingdom), the University of Bremen (Germany), the Weizenbaum Institute (Germany), and the University of São Paulo (Brazil). He was also a Faculty Fellow at the Queer and Trans Research Lab at the Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies, University of Toronto.

Grohmann has published in academic journals and outlets including Big Data & Society, AI & Society, New Media & Society, Media, Culture & Society, International Journal of Communication, Communications of the ACM, Information, Communication & Society, and Social Media + Society. He serves on the editorial boards of Big Data & Society, Communication, Culture & Critique, and the Journal of Labor and Society.
