
Daniel Rios

Daniel Rios is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Universidade Federal Fluminense, with a fellowship funded by FAPERJ (Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro). His research explores how technological affordances, business models, and commercial strategies of transnational video streaming services are reorganizing production cultures and labour practices in Brazil’s video industry.
He holds a PhD in Communication from the Universidade Federal Fluminense. Daniel has held visiting and fellowship appointments with the Digital Media Research Centre (Queensland University of Technology, Australia) and the Creative Labour & Critical Futures project (University of Toronto). His work appears in academic outlets such as Convergence, AI & Society, Comunicación & Sociedad, International Journal of Communication, and Famecos.
In 2025, he received the Portuguese Dissertation Award, presented by the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR). He is currently Vice-Coordinator of TeleVisões (Research Centre for Television and New Media), a research group that examines the relationship between television and the conflicts emerging from today’s media landscape. He is also a collaborator on the SSHRC-funded research project “Worker-led AI Governance: Power Resources and Shared Learnings of Cultural Workers in Canada and Brazil.”
